Objectif

This course is about utopian literature in America, focusing on three classics of the genre, Samuel Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888), Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915), and Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia from 1975. What has been the role of the utopian imagination in American culture? What are some of the particularities of this genre and why has it become so rare at present? These are some of the questions we will explore this semester.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Students will either submit a final essay OR complete two written assignments during the semester which consist of answering several short-essay questions. The student may choose which mode of evaluation she/he prefers. In addition to this written component, every student must sign up for one discussion topic and prepare questions and lead a small-group discussion on a given day.
