Objectif

This class will focus on African American writer Gloria Naylor's 1988 novel Mama Day. The seminar aims at developing the critical tools and skills introduced in ILA while paying close attention to the particular context of Naylor's writing and the specificities of her aesthetics.
The first half of the semester will be devoted to close reading the novel, analyzing aspects such as characterization, narration, structure and language. The second half will introduce secondary literature on several topics relevant to the novel, which will help us develop our analysis and understanding of the text and situate it in a broader literary and theoretical context.

Contenu

Evaluation

Course evaluation will be based on a portfolio composed of 2 short assignments assessing different skills:
1) Close reading of a passage
2) Short essay relating secondary text to the novel
