Alfred Tennyson's literary career spanned nearly 60 years. He worked in a variety of forms, ranging from short lyrical poems to longer works in reflective or narrative modes, drawing on myths and legends, most famously that of Arthur and his knights. His achievement was recognised in his own lifetime as poet laureate. In this seminar we will study Tennyson's works in the context of the cultural, artistic, scientific, religious, social, and political contexts of the Victorian age.

This class will be evaluated by one final essay of 2,500 words.
