Chaucer's dream vision poems were among his most immediately popular works in the century following his death in 1400. This popularity is attested to both by the copying of manuscripts of Chaucer's works and by a flurry of works in which Chaucer's innovative literary productions are imitated, adapted, and updated. In this seminar, we will read a selection of fifteenth-century dream visions that at once create and extend the Chaucerian tradition, including works by named authors (e.g. Lydgate, Charles d'Orléans) and anonymous texts. As it had been for Chaucer in the fourteenth century, in the fifteenth century, the dream vision was a genre that afforded writers special opportunities to explore the possibilities and constraints of literary tradition, the relationship between the body and the mind, and the power dynamics binding men and women and poets and their patrons.

There are two stages in the evaluation of this class:

1) A midterm exam (week 7), 30%: students identify a passage from one of the set texts discussed in class and write a critical commentary on it. A list of extracts that might appear on the exam will be circulated beforehand.

2) A final exam (week 13 or 14), 70%: choosing one from two essay questions, students write an extended response to a prompt set by the instructor.
