What is the difference between a playtext and a play script? For instance, how does a metaphor work on page? Now how does it work on stage? Certainly, analyzing dramatic devices in The Merchant of Venice and using them as fodder for theatrical performance are two entirely separate things, right?... Right?? In this experimental close reading class, we will attempt a cross-pollination between these two approaches, using in-class performances prepared ahead of time to reflect on how literary analysis can feed performance and, conversely, how acting can sharpen/trouble our interpretation of speeches and dialogues from one of Shakespeare's most frequently performed and hotly debated plays. Students will learn to develop their close reading skills and engage creatively with a script using modern-day script analysis as practiced by actors in Britain and North America, with a focus on playing actions. The wager is that by working critically on how we move between reading and acting, we will engage more vividly and intuitively with the thinking of The Merchant of Venice, but also with the question of how a play thinks. (Thinking... such a boring action to play on stage, right?... Right??)

To follow this course, you will need a copy of the Oxford University Press edition of The Merchant of Venice.

Copies of the play, priced 13.- each, will be available at Books Books Books, Rue Jean-Louis Galliard, 2, Lausanne, at the beginning of the semester. Please make sure to ask for the copies ordered by Vincent Laughery (and not Kevin Curran!).
