The primary purpose of this 2nd year seminar is to develop your skills in reading poetry in English, with a focus on the technical terms and issues that are relevant for close reading. A second objective is to introduce you to a selection of African American poets and their work that focused specifically on the experience of being black in a racist society. We will see how poetry can be used to express, resist and survive conditions that otherwise tend to dehumanise and destroy lives. We will read a selection of African American poets including Lawrence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Richard Wright and James Baldwin. This course would be an excellent preparation for the Paris study trip (but is not officially linked to it in any way).

Please note this course will begin on February 24th (Week 2). Please pre-register on Doodle to receive information and the syllabus during Week 1 of the semester.

midterm (analysis of a single poem) and final essay (comparison of two or three poems around a theme or issue)
