The goal of this seminar is, first of all, to learn about the terms and issues involved in literary analysis of the novel: narrator, protagonist, point of view, direct and indirect and free indirect discourse, plot, narrative, structure, irony, imagery, figurative language, foreshadowing, genre, and so on. Another equally important objective is to familiarize you with some of the issues and terms of African American literature, such as issues of race, vernacular, oral culture and intersectional feminism. To this end, we will be reading one of the most important and beloved novels of American literature: Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God (1936), a late Harlem Renaissance work focusing on a woman's quest for fulfillment and authentic life. The final goal of this course is to prepare you for the 3rd year oral exam, during which you need to begin with a close reading of a short passage. This seminar is therefore devoted to the acquisition of close reading skills and close reading pleasure.
