This seminar will consider Scottish writer Kathleen Jamie's most recent collection of prose essays, Surfacing, which was published in September 2019. The collection, which features Jamie's characteristically insightful observations and honed, measured prose, sees Jamie journeying both within and outwith Scotland to locations including a Yup'ik village in Alaska, the northern Isles of Scotland and recalling past trips to China and the 'Autonomous Region' of Tibet. Through our close reading over the course of the semester we will reflect on one of Jamie's most profound texts to date, considering her ideas on topics such as climate change, archaeology and deep time, along with the broader questions she raises about what it means to be human in the age of the Anthropocene. Situating the text in relation to the 'new nature writing' genre, we will frame Surfacing in its wider context and consider its dialogue with ever broader contemporary environmental concerns.
