The purpose of this Master's level course is to learn about one of the most important American writers and literary theorists. Although Poe is well known for his Gothic stories, he also wrote a diverse range of styles and themes, including satire, philosophy and poetry. We will read a selection of his short stories, with a particular attention to their tonal ambiguity and their frequent use of unreliable narration. Generally regarded as a Romantic and an American version of the 'poète maudit,' Poe was a also a hard-working professional writer and a perceptive observer of his culture and society. In addition to reading Poe directly, we will explore some of the critical debates about this controversial figure.
