This course provides a general introduction to English linguistics, introducing students to the essential elements of linguistic analysis and some of their applications.

In the autumn semester, we will start our exploration of the English language by discussing the nature of language and linguistics. From there, we will begin to analyse the structure of the English language. We will start with the smallest component of language: speech sounds (phonetics and phonology). From there, we will move on to the internal structure and organisation of words (morphology) and then we will begin to discuss how words are organised into phrases, clauses and sentences (syntax).

In the spring semester, we will continue with syntax before looking at discourse level elements of language, such as meaning (semantics) and contexts of language use (pragmatics). We will also explore different fields of linguistics, such as dialects of English, language attitudes, and language contact.

Each week, there will be a lecture and a companion tutorial which will build on the concepts outlined during the lecture.

This course will be assessed by three written tests (validation interne) over the course of the academic year. These tests take place during the time of the lecture, lasting 45 minutes each.

Each test is worth one third of your overall course mark.

In order to pass IELL, you must have a minimum average of 4.0.
