The aim of this course is twofold. It provides practical illustration of the features described in the "History of the English Language" course, which it is meant to complement, and it helps to provide students with the linguistic and cultural background necessary for the second-certificate literary seminars in medieval literature. The course involves translation and commentary of set texts, which this year will be provided by extracts from Beowulf, Lawman's Brut, and Chaucer's "The Pardoner's Tale".
