This 2nd year course focuses on two women writers from the end of the 19th century. Both are considered feminists and were associated with the New Woman movement of this period. We will begin with Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening, which was condemned by numerous critics at the time of its publication in 1899 for being scandalous, immoral, and unhealthy. In the second half of the semester, in order to put Chopin's novel into context, we read some short stories by other woman writers of the turn of the century, including several by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, author of the feminist horror classic "The Yellow Wallpaper." The main goal of the class, apart from exposing you to these important pioneers of feminist American literature, is learning the terms and tools of literary analysis of prose, including narration, style, tone, genre and focalization.
