Objectif
Upon completion of the course students should
- understand key concepts in the field of linguistic anthropology
- be able to reflect on language and its effect on society with regard to such topics as globalisation, gender, power, and colonialism
- be able to relate topics to real-life application
- know how to observe local language practices in their social contexts in terms of relevant previous literature
- have acquired the capacity to design and perform an ethnographic study
- know how to collect and analyse ethnographic data adhering to university and discipline standards and expectations
- have honed their research and analysis skills to deliver oral and written reports

Contenu
This course offers an introduction to linguistic anthropology for students interested in how language intersects with culture. Students will gain an understanding of the various sub-disciplines and themes of linguistic anthropology including language ideologies, power and social differentiation, and communities and practices. The course focuses on both theoretical approaches and ethnographic methods.
Evaluation
One semiotic analysis - 25%
One final essay - 75%
Bibliographie
Compulsory readings, videos and slides will be posted on Moodle throughout the course. There is no need to buy a textbook.
