Contenu
This course introduces students to the study of the language found in television and film. A broad area of research, this seminar will provide an overview of some of the sociolinguistic issues related to this topic. Students will critique different frameworks and methodologies to the study of this type of language, looking at a range of linguistic features and levels.
The seminar begins with a discussion of the nature and functions of dialogue, including its similarities and differences with naturally occurring speech. This is followed by topics related to questions of representation and discrimination in television and film, and how what we see on screen impacts and is influenced by attitudes and ideologies to language. The seminar will then touch on genre and characterisation, followed by reflection on the relationship between multilingualism and these forms of media.
