Objectif

After successfully completing this course, student will be able to:

- Understand and apply essential sociolinguistic concepts and theories
- Critically engage with linguistic research from a variety of subfields
- Discuss academic argumentation and research in an informal setting using visual aids (e.g. hand-out, PowerPoint slides, poster, whiteboard) where appropriate
- Conduct ethical and methodologically rigorous primary empirical research

Contenu

Although English is not an official language, it serves as Switzerland's lingua franca. This course thus seeks to explore the state and status of English in the country, considering different contexts (e.g. education, business, tourism) and social factors. The course will also discuss how the prominence of English in contemporary Switzerland impacts attitudes towards and use of national languages. Students will engage critically with existing studies on the topic and also with the larger sociolinguistic canon, on topics such as World Englishes, globalization, multilingualism, language acquisition, and language policy.
