Contenu
What does your voice say about your identity? What roles does phonetic analysis play in achieving justice? This module provides an accessible introduction to forensic phonetics. The first half of the module covers topics in general forensic phonetics: speaker profiling & comparison, earwitness evidence, speech content determination, and Language Analysis for the Determination of Origin (LADO). The second half of the module is dedicated to project-based work, where students embark on their own forensic phonetic projects. The module will be largely problem-based with reference to specific (legal) cases, and you will be familiarised with relevant linguistic 'tools' for analyzing the cases.
Evaluation
The module will be assessed via an essay (2,500 words±10%) (60%) and an oral presentation (40%). Essay deadline: 13 May, 2022.
Bibliographie
There is no single textbook that will cover all the topics in this module. However, if you would like to do some preparatory readings, we recommend the following texts: Coulthard, M., Johnson, A. & Wright, D. (2016). An Introduction to Forensic Linguistics: Language in Evidence. Routledge. French, P. & Stevens, L. (2013) Forensic speech science. Chapter Twelve of M. Jones & R. Knight (eds.)
