The aim of this class is to consider how, for the last 30 years or so, "masculinity" has also become an object of study with the advent of gender studies. While, in the 20th century, the focus was on women and feminism, masculinity remained very much unexplored, taken for granted as "natural", and even taken to mean humanity in general.

This class aims to interrogate how spoken and written words have contributed to the consensus about a "self-evident" masculinity in the 20th century, but also, how writing and literature undermined the consensus.

The class is going to start with a contemporary text in French, which will help us articulate some of the main issues.

On the basis of the issues and interrogations raised by Ivan Jablonka, the class will then focus on a historicized representation of masculinity in a novel by Pat Barker about WWI: Regeneration.

Those who are thinking of taking an exam in relation to this class shall have to read WWI poetry in relation to Barker's novel.

Moodle key: MascS22

Credits and grade are awarded on the basis of the participation in the class discussions and they include the writing of an essay of 1'500-2000 words, to be written before the end of the term.

The Books have been ordered from BASTA-Dirigny: Ivan Jablonka, Un garçon comme vous et moi, seuil, poche, 2021 Pat Barker, Regeneration (1991), Penguin More source texts shall be available, also, from the moodle page of the class.
