Contenu

This course examines a broad range of medieval English texts whose focus is domestic, including conduct books written for children, instructions for servants in great houses, collections of exempla, and instructions for the management of land and farm animals. In each case, we will be interested in analysing the role that our primary works attribute to their readers both in relation to their fellow men and women and to the natural world. As well as treating our poems and prose texts as documents in the history of household culture and human ecology, we will also consider the nature of the entertainment that they provided, both with regard to the literary forms they assume and the sometimes contradictory or fanciful advice that they give.

Evaluation

There are three possible modes of assessment:

1) A final essay

2) A faculty oral exam

3) A faculty written exam
