Objective

The course offers an introductory overview of the sociology of work. We will be looking at the place occupied by the study of work within sociology as a discipline, since many of the main theoretical frameworks in contemporary sociology have roots in the world of (paid) work. What analytical perspectives do these frameworks offer? Given that they were often elaborated in a relatively distant past, are they still relevent for understanding the current changes taking place in the labour market today? In addition to the course reading list, additional references will be provided after each class, enabling student to develop the themes addressed. Documentaries and other audio-visual material will be used to illustrate each stage of the course and to stimulate collective reflection on the current changes taking place in the world of work.

Content

The course will follow a historical presentation of the characteristics of paid work and the sociological perspectives developed to understand the realities of the labour market, in relation to other spheres of society. Particular attention will be paid to the gender dimension of (paid and unpaid) work, since women's experiences have often been neglected in the sociology of work, despite the fact that they are illustrative of many of the current evolutions in the world of work.

Evaluation

One 4 hour written examination.
