Familiarize the student with the principle of transport of material, fluid, heat by advection and diffusion to allow the student to use these important principles in their Master work


The basic formalisms will be derived, the mathematical equations explored, and their physical meaning explained. Subsequently the formalisms will be applied to examples pertinent to fluid-rock interaction during metamorphism and ore formation. The movement of magma at depth, magma emplacement, and transport of heat associated with this.

Equations will be solved using available transport programs, or obtained by programming in EXCEL or Matlab



Programme requirements

Knowledge of Bachelor level petrology, mineralogy. Knowledge of Matlab will be of advantage
