Political science is all but a theoretically homogeneous discipline. Various factors, among which different historical and national background, have generated multiple, and even contradictory, theoretical approaches. This meta-theoretical pluralism unites different theoretical and methodological approaches which contribute to the formulation of hypotheses that explain the political phenomena.

The main goal of this course-seminary will be to indicate conceptual instruments that make it possible to grasp the factors forging the pluralism of theoretical approaches in political science. In particular, this theoretical and paradigmatical pluralism will be illustrated through theories and concepts classified along an empirical and a normative axis. Our main focus will be on democracy: this political phenomenon will be explored from different theoretical perspectives in order to show how a single phenomenon can be analysed, observed and theorized in a variety of ways. The aim will be to show interconnections and interdependencies of these two axes.
