The topic of this seminar is Angela Carter's The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, a picaresque novel influenced by Surrealism which we will examine in its broader historical, social and literary context. Carter's novel addresses thematic and narrative questions, such as power, gender, desire, history, genre, voice, etc. that will provide the focus of our close reading.

This is not a lecture course. Instead, it is to be conducted as a workshop in which students are expected to contribute by participating in class discussions as well as in small group work. I expect students to have read the assigned texts carefully before coming to class and to take an active part in class discussions. In order to receive a validation for this seminar, students will also need to:
-write a paper (around 8-10 pages; 3000 words) on a theme related to the seminar
-give an oral presentation (around 10 minutes long) on part of the novel + critical material we will be studying in class
