The aim of this seminar is to present, with hands-on exercises, the different phases of empirical research in social sciences. Survey methods and secondary analyses are the main approaches to be covered. Students will acquire methodological tools to carry out their own research projects as well to evaluate the research of others. The seminar takes an interactive form as teachers' presentations and group exercises are alternated. Research on prejudice and immigration attitudes is employed to illustrate the methodological topics.

The seminar programme consists of 1. Analysis of methodological choices in existing empirical research, 2. Introduction to survey methods, 3. Elaboration of a research question, 4. Introduction to quantitative analyses with SPSS software, and 5. Student reports on the different stages of research. (the seminar is taught in French)
