Objective

In depth understanding of the concepts of igneous and metamorphic petrology.

Content

Igneous petrology

genesis of tholeiites (mid-ocean ridge magmatism, layered intrusions) and genesis of calco-alkaline rocks, by applying theoretical and practical methods to study igneous rocks. Practical work includes polarization microscopy and theoretical calculations

Metamorphic petrology

Metamorphism of carbonates, mixed volatile systems, fluid flow in metamorphic rocks, kinetics of mineral reactions. Practical work includes polarization microscopy and theoretical calculations

Evaluation

oral examination - see "plan d'études"
