Objective

To encourage the use of qualitative methodological tools through the sociological analysis of occupations and professions in the contemporary context. Students work in small groups, and undertake an empirical investigation of an occupation / profession of their choice.

Content

Students work in small groups (3 - 4 people) on an occupation or profession of their choice. Each group begins with a literature search, including a statistical overview of the sociodemographic characteristics of their chosen profession and its evolution over time. This step is designed to help in the elaboration of a research question and theoretical framework for the empirical field-work.
Each student then carries out at least one semi-structured interview with a member of their chosen occupation, which must then be fully transcribed. During the interview process, they also carry out a "mini observation" of the professional environment of their interviewee and write up ethnographic field notes.
All the members of the group pool their empirical data (interview transcripts and field notes) and produce a joint sociological analysis of their chosen profession.

Evaluation

In order to obtain the 6 ECTS credits, it is necessary to:
a) Participate actively in the seminar throughout the semester, particularly during the collective sessions. Regular attendance is required
b) Read the articles on the recommended reading list and post at least 3 comments (a minimum of 1000 characters each) via the Moodle plateform
c) Present or discuss at least one article from the recommended reading list
d) Carry out an empirical study, including at least one semi-structured biographical interview (to be fully retranscribed), a mini observation of an employment situation and a contribution to the collective analysis of the field-work data of all the group members.

Bibliography

Une bibliographie générale sera distribuée au début du semestre et les textes de références seront disponibles sur la plateforme Moodle du séminaire. Des références bibliographiques complémentaires seront données au fil des séances consacrées à la discussion des textes de référence.
