Course objectives:

In this class, you will continue your training in literary analysis, and develop your close-reading skills in poetry. You will further improve your ability to look closely and methodically at a text, and to understand and identify both a number of literary devices, as well as its formal elements. You will also engage with secondary sources, and be encouraged to use them in a dialectic manner to enrich and confirm your own observations, arguments, and conclusions about the text.

We will read a selection of poems thematically linked to war ranging from mid-19th century Civil War poems to contemporary works. Careful textual analysis will be used to examine the poems individually, and will then allow us to distinguish themes and similarities in the corpus. Beyond temporal and thematic links, the purpose of this course will also be to look at war poetry as a genre of its own, with its recurring motifs, internal expectations, but also disruptions thereof.

Midterm (1000-1200 words): Analysis of a poem. In class.
Final essay (1500-1800 words): Thematic essay. Students with "Enseignement complémentaire" (4 ECTS) write a final essay of 2500 words using secondary sources. Possibility to rewrite. Due 1 June on Moodle.
