Objective
This course aims to introduce students to quantitative research, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Structured on the methodological approach in sports sciences (Adapted Physical Activities and Health, Training and Performance), it will train them to the experimental plans and the most common quantitative methods in this field.
The objectives are to enable students to understand and critically evaluate the methodological and statistical elements of a quantitative research, to acquire autonomy in the implementation of a quantitative research, to be more competent in reading empirical scientific articles from their field of study and, more generally, to better understand the scientific process.
Content
This course has five modules. Each module starts from a scientific article of the field, analyzes the link between the research question and the statistical method and analysis used, develops the theory of statistical analysis, then applies the statistical method on a real data set using a statistical software.
On the methodology side, the course will cover, among other things, observational and experimental studies, experimental design with randomized control group, experimental design with repeated measurements, cross-over study, case study.
On the statistical side, the course will cover, among others, the analysis of variance, the analysis of variance with repeated measures, the non-parametric analysis and the regression analysis.
Evaluation
The evaluation consists of a final 2-hour written examination of the course material. The exam will be done without documentation provided by the student.
