Contenu
This second year course will focus on the work of Nobel Prize-winning American novelist Toni Morrison. We will read her first and her latest short novel, The Bluest Eye (1970) and A Mercy (20089, which will allow us to examine her evolving style and recurring preoccupations, including the legacy of African American slavery, the complexity of parent-child relationships, and the psychological consequences of racism, sexism and trauma. The course is designed as an introduction to the study of prose narrative, and will teach the terms, issues and strategies required for reading and writing about short fiction and novels in a university context. Students will develop their ability to analyze a fictional text in terms of its structure, genre, and narrative strategies as well as to explicate a passage and compose a critical essay about it.
