Objectif
The primary objective of this course is to familiarize students with the terms and tools of the literary analysis of poetry in English. We will be learning the vocabulary specific to the study of poetry, and we will be practicing close textual analysis. A second objective will be to learn about the poetic works and strategies of two major American poets, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. Although writing at the same time, and both products of New England, no two poets are more dissimilar in terms of their formal approach to poetic expression. And yet, in spite of their many differences, Dickinson and Whitman both share an interest in challenging gender norms and social and poetic conventions.
Evaluation
In order to validate the course, students will need to write two short essays (a midterm of 2-3 pages and a final essay of 4-6 pages), and lead a group discussion during the course of one class session.
