Content
The aim of this course is twofold. It provides practical illustration of the features described in the "History of the English Language" course, which it is meant to complement, and it helps to provide students with the linguistic and cultural background necessary for the second-certificate literary seminars in medieval literature. The theme this year will be 'Heroic literature'. Three extracts will be studied: one from the Old English epic poem Beowulf, one from the Middle English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is the finest of the Middle English romances relating to the court of King Arthur; and The Hunting of the Cheviot, a Middle English ballad. Texts will be photocopied and distributed.
