Is there such a thing as a woman's poetic tradition in America? This course will read the work of Emily Dickinson, H.D., Elisabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, and Adrienne Rich, in order to understand how women writers read each other and write within a shared poetic framework. We will also think about the advantages and limits of identity-based critical groupings such "women's writing." The main objective of the course, however, will be to familiarize students with the tools and concepts required for critically reading and writing about English poetry.

Midterm, final essay, group discussion
