Objective

The course provides basic elements to understand the interactions between the Mediterranean basin and India/Asia from Antiquity to the medieval times. It introduces the students to the major chapters of this history as well as to different theoretical tools useful for the study of extra-European history.

Content

Even if usually considered heirs of distant cultures and religions and often studied separately, Asia (in particular, ancient India, China, central Asia) and Europe have been in contact since Antiquity. Introducing the notion of "connected history" (S. Gruzinski et S. Subrahmanyam) the course deals with major episodes of these encounters, from the Greek period (Alexander's conquests, the Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kingdoms) to the Islamization of the region.

Working on the basis of source documents (in translation), we explore the different logics of encounters (trade, politics, religion, "science") and evaluate their impact on cultural dynamics, on the Mediterranean as well as on the Indian/Asian sides. A particular attention is given to religions in contact along the so-called "silk roads" and the Indian Ocean - in particular Buddhism, Christianity, Manichaeism and Islam.

The class also focuses on historiographical issues related to the different cases examined, exploring the different ways to write the history of relations between Europe and extra-European civilizations - a particularly sensitive question when thinking about theories on the so-called "clash of civilizations".

The course will continue in the Spring semester 2022, with a focus on the medieval period (from the arrival of Islam in the Indian Ocean to Vasco de Gama).

Evaluation

- Two online tests during the semester
- One presentation of a source or of secondary literature during class
