Although often considered as secondary, play, sports and physical activities are an absolutely central aspect of cultures and societies, linked to cosmological, bioethical, sociological or political aspects. The seminar will first survey some classical theoretical reflections that relate the different dimensions of play, sport and the body. The analysis will then focus on various examples, exploring the modalities of their circulation between India and Europe. Between European practices imported during the colonial period (such as cricket or "Western" medicine) and practices exported (such as polo, ayurveda or yoga), the seminar will explore different "cultural transfers" and the phenomenon of their reappropriation in the different contexts of their circulation. A particular emphasis will be placed on the role of Switzerland in the history of these exchanges between Asia and Europe.
