In relation to this theme of comparative political sociology, there are a number of objectives:

1) reinforcement of transversal skills:
- analytical reading of theoretical and methodological studies
- oral expression
- writing skills
- comparative approach

2) acquisition of basic skills in qualitative methodology:
- capacity to understand different means of data collection through observation, interviews and document analysis
- capacity to prepare and carry out data analysis through observation, interviews, and document analysis
- analysis of the data collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis

This seminar's goal is to familiarize students with empirical research on a theme in comparative political sociology: otherness and its relation to politics. Starting with a consideration of the views on "Islam" and "the West" and an investigative inquiry, this will involve analysing the ways of (re)configuring images of "the self" and "the other" in connection with international events (attacks, wars, revolutions, etc.).

Students will be evaluated on a number of aspects of their work:

I - The discussion of texts will be evaluated individually on the basis of:
1) Active participation during the sessions
2) Text summaries to be posted on Moodle

II- The investigative project is developed as we go along. It is comprised of research stages which will be integrated in the final report.
