Objective

- Acquire the relevant tools for a sociological reading of the relationship between parents and professionals in education.
- Familiarize and / or deepen their knowledge of both the topic and the methods used in research in the sociology of education.

Content

Changes in educational policies lead to redefining and re-examining the sharing of the education of children between parents and educational professionals as well as the role of each of the parties.

This seminar will focus on the relationships of different types families to the educational question itself, in particular on the basis of their multiple social characteristics.

We will insist on the expectations of different types of families with regard to formal education but also on the relationship built by the actors of formal education with these different families. The seminar will thus continue, but autonomously, the reflection on the question of inequalities. The practices and representations of the families regarding the roles that each must assume will be examined through field research that will allow the students to become familiar with and / or to deepen their knowledge both of the theme and of the methods used in the context of research in the sociology of education. Regarding methodology, a focus will put on skilled use of "semi-structured interviews".

Evaluation

An active participation is required from students.
Initially, the students will have to present texts dealing with this topic. This work will serve as a basis for setting up a grid of interviews and for their realization. These will then be analyzed by group and their presentation, oral and written, will be the subject of the second part of the evaluation.
