This seminar focuses on the circulation of medical knowledge and technologies coming from biomedicine (obstetrics and gynaecology) and other approaches and conceptions of the body (Chinese medicine and acupuncture) in different geographical contexts (Europe, the Arab world and Sub-Saharan Africa). It will examine their transformations and adaptations in the societies in which they were introduced as well as their interactions with pre-existing therapeutic forms of knowledge and practices. The seminar will explore how the circulation of knowledge and techniques is related to the movements of people and sometimes objects and how these fluxes spread out in a heterogeneous and individualized way according to specific social, cultural and historical contexts (colonisation, inscription into the global capitalist economy, etc.). It will also analyze how the discourses of actors or institutions about these knowledge, techniques and technologies generate different practices more or less related to their original forms. An introduction to the theoretical bases of medical anthropology (North-American tradition), of the anthropological approach and methodology will be followed by the analysis of several ethnographic case studies. Over the semester, students will present and discuss methodological and research articles on the proposed thematic modules and elaborate and realize a short-term ethnographic research.
