Seminar

Autumn semester
4 hours per week
56 hours per semester
Weekly
Teaching language(s): French
Public: Yes
Credits: 6.00

Objective

The main goal of the seminar is to develop a critical understanding of the relations between science, medicine, and society with special focus on visual cultures and technologies (images, imaging technologies, cinema, etc.)

Content

TOPIC : The seminar falls within the perspective of the social studies of science, a relatively new field that has been institutionalized for about a decade. At the intersection of many disciplines in the humanities and in the social sciences (sociology, anthropology, history, gender studies to name only a few), knowledge making is considered in relation to various actors, places, objects, instruments, theories, disciplines, or discourses.

SPECIFIC THEME: the seminar is devoted to analyzing the visual cultures in medicine and sciences, in particular the relations between science, medicine, image, and cinema.

APPROACH : files with selected documents (sources and resources) will be prepared by the instructors. Students will have to work in team to articulate an original questioning by analyzing the selected documents and enriching the initial corpus with additional materials. A vade-mecum with the research topics and practical information will be handed on the first day.

REQUIREMENTS : regular attendance at classes and active participation, research and presentations
