Objective

The research workshop "discourses, archives and documents" offers the opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with research tools aimed at gathering textual and documentary sources, criticize and analyze them. There are three fundemental, and related, topic in this workshop: critical discourse analysis, documentary analysis and archival work.

Content

The "discourse analysis" section considers discourses from a critical perspective. It offers a theoretical dimension (on the relation between discourses and society, ideology and power) as well as a conceptual and methodological perspective (mainly drawn from the Critical Discourse Analysis theory, such as genres, framing, style, etc.)

The "archive" section offers an introduction to the concrete aspects of conducting a scientific research based on archives. It will include first an overview of the main public and private archival institutions in switzerland, and second, an introduction to the basic techniques for doing archival research. This section will include a guided tour of selected archives as well a practical work.

The section of "documentary analysis" offers an introduction to the methods and techniques for gathering, classifying, and analyzing institutionnal documents, with a special focus on documents stemming from International Organizations (such as the World Bank).

Various research topics are proposed in order to teach the research methods coverd in the workshop.
