The purpose of this class is to introduce you to American Gothic literature with a particular focus on how fictional horror has served as a means for acknowledging and reflecting on real historical horror in the United States. We will read a selection of texts spanning the period from 1830 to 1960, and cover a range of themes including Female Gothic, African American Gothic, Southern Gothic and the uncanny and grotesque. We will also watch one early zombie film and read the play Streetcar Named Desire for its Southern Gothic elements.

A selection of texts including works by Poe, Alcott, Gilman, Richard Wright, Tennessee Williams.
