Objective

The course aims at a better understanding of the distribution of the elements and molecules that make up the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere of our planet Earth as well as the rules that govern their distribution.

Content

- Origin of the universe, nucleaosynthesis and the formation and chemical composition of the Earth relative to the universe.
- Composition of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere and their changes in composition with time.
- Geochemical classification of the elements and their distribution.
- Atoms, isotopes, cristals and solutions in geosciences
- Introduction to the use of stable, radioactive and radiogenic elements in Earth system science.
- Introduction to thermodynamics of geochemical processes.
- Geochemical reactions, diffusion of elements.
- Primary and secondary processes governing the distribution of elements during magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary processes.
- Interactions between gases-fluides and rocks.
- Natural versus anthropogenic processes.

Evaluation

Written exam and marked TP's during the semester.
