Objective

At the end of the term, students should be able to:
1. recognize and describe key concepts and theories of social geography;
2. apply the concepts and evaluate the theories in socio-geographical analyses of different topics;
3. read scientific journal articles (in French and in English) efficiently, to analyze them and to write a personal critique of the selected texts;
4. recognize the importance of the spatial dimensions of society, in particular in regard to the (re)production of social inequalities.

Content

Social geography, a sub-discipline of human geography, covers a large and diverse field that examines society in its spatial dimensions. Social geography starts from the recognition that human actions, social relations, phenomena and structures (including those related to power) coproduce material and symbolic space. In turn, physical space and its representations influence human actions, social relations, phenomena, processes and structures. Apart from describing and analyzing socio-spatial processes, social geographers often take a normative stand, critiquing and trying to defy and reduce social injustices.

This course examines the spatial dimensions of society (in its relation to culture, economy, politics and the biophysical environment). Relevant issues are analyzed through different theoretical perspectives of human geography, including spatial analysis, radical geography and post-structuralism. The course generally takes a critical approach based on radical geography but informed by ideas from postmodernism and poststructuralism.

Evaluation

Coursework (continuous evaluation during the term): 30%
Written exam (two hrs) on contents of lectures, readings and TPs: 70%
