Objective

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. evaluate the North-South relations and to describe them
2. compare and explain the transformation of different countries of the global south in their geohistorical, geopolitical and economic context
3. explain the links between development and environment in rural and urban contexts
4. appreciate the relevance of North-South relations in structuring wellbeing in countries of the global South and North.

Content

The concept of Development has structured North-South relations since decolonisation of the 1940s-1960s until the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals today. This cours seeks to describe the evolution and the processes of international development from a geographical perspective.

In the first part of the cours, global development will be studied through issues such as (neo-)colonialism, the structure of the world economy, inequalities and foreign aid. In the second part, development trajectories of several countries of the global South will be examined and juxtaposed in their economic, social and political dimensions. In the third part, selected development themes will be discussed, including urbanisation, agriculture, nature conservation and gender. The course concludes through a critical reflection on the links between development and environment and on the concept of sustainable development, including as expressed through the SDGs.

Evaluation

Written exam (2hrs)
