Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the Study of Religions (2017 ->)

Programme requirements :Propaedeutic year program (1st year) :
- Major (42 credits ECTS), 4 study-units : « Historiography, concepts ans methods » (10 ECTS), « Introduction to three Area Studies » (15 ECTS), « Introduction to disciplinary approaches » (9 ECTS), « Options » (8 ECTS).
- Minor (18 credits ECTS) : « Religions, language and texts », theology, political science, social sciences, psychology, history (20 ECTS), ancient history (20 ECTS), archeology (20 ECTS), philosophy (20 ECTS), South Asian languages and civilisations (20 ECTS), Computer Sciences for Humanities (20 ECTS), Geography.

To successfully complete the Major propaedeutic year program, the followings are required :
- arithmetical average of the five marks equal or superior to 4 obtained in the two study-units « Historiography, concepts ans methods » (2 marks), and « Introduction to three Area Studies » (3 marks), on the condition that the student did not obtained a mark inferior to 3, when required at the second attempt.
- A minimum of 14 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, in the study-units « Introduction to disciplinary approaches » and « Options », subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations.

To successfully complete the Minor propaedeutic year program, the followings are required :
- A minimum of 15 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations of the Minor « Religions, language and texts ».
- To successfully complete the propaedeutical year program of the external Minor, with the conditions of the Faculty in charge of the concerned Minor programme.

Second part programme (2nd and 3rd years) :
- Major (78 credits ECTS), 6 study-units : « Historiography, concepts ans methods II » (12 ECTS), « Advanced courses in Area Studies » (27 ECTS), « Advanced courses in disciplinary approaches » (18 ECTS), « Language » (12 ECTS), « Options » (9 ECTS).
- Minor (42 credits ECTS) : « Religions, language and texts », political science, social sciences, psychology, history (50 ECTS), ancient history (50 ECTS), archeology (50 ECTS), philosophy (50 ECTS), South Asian languages and civilisations (50 ECTS), Computer Sciences for Humanities (20 ECTS), Geography.

To successfully complete the Major program, the followings are required :
- A minimum of 63 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, in the second part programme of the Major, subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations and that he did not obtain a mark inferior to 3 at the second attempt for the « integrative exam » of the study-unit « Historiography, concepts ans methods II ».

To successfully complete the Minor, the followings are required :
- A minimum of 33 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, in the second part program of the Minor « Religions, language and texts », subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations ;
- To successfully complete the second part program of the external Minor or Minor in Theology, with the conditions of the Faculty in charge of the concerned Minor program.



Learning objectives

First year

By the end of the first year of study in the major, students will be able to:
- situate the authors, concepts, theories, methods, and fundamental stakes of, and orientate themselves in, the historiography of the discipline (basic knowledge),
- master the introductory knowledge in three area studies,
- master the introductory knowledge in at least two approaches,
- format bibliographical references according to the norms of the area studies and approaches in question,
- identify and use the instruments (bibliographical documentation, critical tools, etc.) of the area studies and approaches in question, including those in foreign languages,
- master introductory knowledge and competences in one or more related domain(s),
- communicate, in French, orally and in writing in a satisfactory manner.

Second part

By the end of the second part of the major, students will be able to :
- elucidate the main epistemological issues on the basis of comprehensive knowledge of the authors, concepts, theories, methods, and fundamental stakes as well as the historiography of the discipline,
- identify the issues linked to the evolutions and transformations of « religions » in the history of humankind and in the contemporary world,
- develop critical and relativized thinking regarding the object « religion(s) » and its construction,
- master in-depth knowledge in at least three area studies and apply it in support of studied themes, and master basic knowledge in other area studies,
- master in-depth knowledge in approaches and apply it in support of studied themes,
- master the necessary languages to study a area studies, in order to read and understand the corpora of the respectives area studies,
- master introductory and in-depth knowledge and competences in one or more related domain(s),
- relate coherently the fields, approaches, and their analytical tools,
- investigate problematics specific to the discipline,
- introduce a comparative dimension to these problematics,
- identify and use the analytical instruments of the area studies and approaches in question,
- identify a multiplicity of sources in their production and reception contexts,
- identify critically the stakes and rhetorical constructs specific to the material studied,
- locate a (historical, linguistic, sociological, etc.) datum within a wider (historical, theoretical, etc.) context in order to put it in perspective and relate it to other data,
- read critically scholarly literature and identify the problematics developed therein,
- devise a problematic pertaining to a theme, fieldwork, or an object of study,
- present their thinking in a structured and evidenced manner, both orally and in writing,
- communicate both orally and in writing in correct French.

 

Mineure « Religions, langue et textes » (2013 ->)

Programme requirements :Propaedeutic year programme (1st year) : - 3 study-units : « Introduction to a language », « Introduction to an additional Area Study », « Options ».

To successfully complete the Minor propaedeutic year programme, the followings are required :
- A minimum of 15 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations of propaedeutic year programme of the Minor.

Second part programme (2nd and 3rd year) : - 3 study-units : « Languages and religions : textual approach », « Area Study/Disciplinary Aproach », « Options ».

To successfully complete the Minor, the followings are required :
- A minimum of 33 credits has to be successfully completed, when required at the second attempt, in the second part programme of the Minor « Religions, language and texts », subject to the fact that the student presented all the required evaluations.
