For a Narratuve Theory at the service of Education

A gap of more than fifty years has opened up between contemporary narratology and the concepts taught in French classes. The present research, which is rooted in the intersection between didactics and narratology, aims to break out of this fossilization of applied theory, to transform it into a theory that is discussed, updated, enriched, and re-energized. By confronting the vast range of possibilities offered by contemporary narratology with the realities of the teaching field and with the current orientations of the didactics of literature, we aim to rebuild bridges between narrative theory and teaching. In particular, we will draw on the advances made under the impetus of linguistic, rhetorical, cognitive and transmedial approaches, to show that none of the notions taught today is the subject of a critical consensus and that alternatives or complements exist for each of them. We will also rely on data collected in the field: not only by analysing study plans, textbooks and books circulating in schools, but also by relying on questionnaires and interviews with teachers in secondary I and II in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, France, Quebec and Belgium. On this empirical basis, we will try to develop the narratological toolkit by thinking it as closely as possible to school use and the current aims of literary studies.

Group for Comics Studies (GrEBD)

The aim of the GrEBD is to develop and promote academic research on comics from an interdisciplinary perspective, in particular by studying this means of expression in its formal, narratological, historical, and cultural aspects. GrEBD's activities include organizing Bachelor's and Master's level courses, public lectures, scientific events and exhibitions.
