Research directions

Cutaneous biology

The research in the laboratory of cutaneous biology is concentrated on the molecular pathogenesis of epidermal genodermatoses and cutaneous adnexal tumors. To deal with these projects, we are developing human models of genodermatoses and cutaneous tumors using viral gene transfer methods and keratinocyte grafts on scid mice. To analyze protein-protein interactions co-immunoprecipitations and the yeast-two hybrid system are employed. We are using gene transfer to express them in keratinocytes and cell lines. Novel assay systems are developed for molecular diagnostic of genodermatoses. Using bio informatics, new genes expressed during epidermal differentiation are isolated

Virulence factors of pathogenic fungi

Tissue engineering and transplantation

Skin regeneration in the acute burn with keratinocyte and fibroblast autografts
Therapy of hypopigmentation disorders with isolated melanocytes
Role of antioxidants in tissue regeneration

Melanoma

A study of melanoma metastasis and micrometastasis in sentinel nodes
Research of melanoma antigens and differentiation of melanocytes in melanomas and in relation to prognosis

Dermato-oncology

The research in dermato-oncology is focused on the molecular pathogenesis of tumor suppressor genes in cutaneous adnexal tumors. To carry out this research, modern methods in molecular and cellular biology are utilised such as analysis of protein-protein interaction, in vitro and in vivo transfer of genes and creation of animal models. Based on these new knowledge on the function of these genes, new ways of therapeutic interventions wil be designed and tested
